For 29 minutes,Hurricane matched up with the talented Snow Canyon Warriors in every aspect of a game. However for the Tigers, the game is 32 minutes in length and for three minutes,Snow Canyon turned a two-point lead into a 12-point halftime cushion in knocking off the Tigers 59-56 in the Region 9 opener for both schools on Jan. 6. Snow Canyon (6-3,1-0) went on a torrid run the last three minutes of the second quarter, with senior Bryson Hurst and junior Dalton Groskreutz providing the dagger that eventually stabbed the Tigers heart. Hurst nailed a pair of three-pointers and Groskreutz canned a trio of free throws in that stretch. Then a personal and technical foul on the Tigers allowed any Tiger hope to deflate as four straight points from the free throw line ended the first half of play with SC enjoying a 12-point cushion,35-23,at intermission. That three-minute drought spoiled a tremendous first half by Hurricane’s Sam Force who canned nine points in the first quarter and three more in the second to provide the bulk of the offense for Hurricane. Force scored in double digits the second half as well, ending the game with a team high 22 points for Hurricane (4-6,0-1). To the Tigers credit, they didn’t throw in the proverbial towel in the second half. They scratched their way to 18 points in the third quarter, matching SC’s output with Force scoring six,Jaron Ewell and Mike Long each hitting a pair of buckets and sophomore Gordie Dotson draining one of his three treys in the game. Snow Canyon continued to put the pressure on the Tigers, substituting players at nearly every dead ball and pressing Hurricane throughout the game. The Tigers were a bit weary, mainly inserting five of their seniors and the Dotson for the majority of the game. Groskreutz’s 23 points led all scorers,Hurst added 18 including three treys. Force’s 22 points led Hurricane with Ewell adding 10 and Long and Dotson each scoring nine for Hurricane. |
