The Hurricane volleyball team faced the undefeated Snow Canyon Warriors on Thursday, and though the Tigers remained strong, they lost the match 3-1.

Hurricane coach Daniel McKeehan was pleased with his team’s performance.
“I think they played hard all night,”he said.

Hurricane started strong, losing game one by only two points (23-25). The Warriors also claimed game two by a 17-25 score. Down 2-0,Hurricane rallied to take game three by a score of 25-23.

Unfortunately, the Warriors were determined to finish their season undefeated for the second consecutive year. Snow Canyon rolled over the Tigers in game four, using a dominating 25-13 score to seal the match.

The match was not without Tiger highlights, though. Erica Shields faced Snow Canyon’s front line without wavering. She finished the game with an impressive 41 digs and nine kills. Karissa Law added 11 kills for the Tigers.

McKeehan said his team struggled in the same area it has all year.
“It’s been the same thing all year,”he said. “It’s the serving.”

He added that he would like to see his team find a more positive attitude as they prepare to serve.

“The disappointment is their mental attitude when they get on the line (to serve),”he said. “That was the only downfall tonight.”

Despite the loss, the Tigers finished third in Region 9 competition. They finished the regular season with a region record of 6-4. Hurricane was 9-4 overall. The third-place finish puts the Tigers in the 3A state championships as a third seed.

McKeehan said early this year, his team set a goal to finish no less than third in the region.
“Going into the season,we felt that (third) was a great seed to have, and it was winnable”McKeehan said. “So we’re happy.”

Hurricane will have a week’s worth of practices to work out any remaining kinks before traveling to Utah Valley State College in Provo for the state tournament. The tournament begins Friday as the Tigers will face Uintah at 8 a.m. Uintah finished second in Region 10 with a record of 9-1.
