Online courses provide greater access for students |
Area residents who have been unable to pursue a college education due to personal, family and work commitments can access a wide variety of classes via MCC’s Distance Education Campus. Online classes provide a way students can study, learn and interact with their instructor and classmates anytime of the day or night. Chuck Spotts, Mohave Community College’s vice president of instruction and student services, said, “The college’s distance education campus increases learning opportunities for all residents regardless of where they live or when they work.” “Students work closely with their instructors and fellow students through the Internet,” said Diana Stithem, MCC’s dean of distance education. “Online classes provide the same content and use the same textbooks as the equivalent class offered in the traditional MCC classroom. “Most classes also use additional publisher Internet resources. For example, MCC’s online Meteorology and Oceanography courses have real-time online lab resources provided by the American Meteorological Society,” Stithem explained. “Because the distance education campus is without walls, MCC can offer courses with a variety of start and end dates. Fall semester online offerings include math, the science courses mentioned above, English, computer courses, business and accounting courses, history, geography and humanities courses,” Stithem added. For more information, including a complete list of this fall’s online courses, go to the MCC Web site at www.mohave.edu or stop by any MCC campus and speak with an academic advisor.

Deductions in Addition to the Standard Deduction |
Hurricane, Utah If you are planning on taking the standard deduction when you file your 2009 tax return, there are a couple of additional deductions you could be entitled to: a sales tax deduction on the purchase of a new vehicle and a property tax deduction.
According to advertisements, it’s a great time to buy a new vehicle. In addition to the deals being offered by car dealerships, the IRS is also offering a deal to those who buy a new motor vehicle: the opportunity to deduct the sales tax paid on the purchase.

Horse Fire Continues to Burn in Zion |
The lightning caused Horse Fire continues to burn in Zion National Park. The fire was first detected on July 7 and is located approximately 1 ½ miles southeast of Lava Point in the northern part of the park. It is now estimated at 900 acres and remains at 25% contained.
Fire activity was light yesterday due to overcast skies, higher humidity and very light rain. The most active area of the fire remains to the south and east, near Goose Creek. The northern portion of the fire is still showing little activity. Approximately 20 firefighters are working on the fire. Additional firefighters are will be brought in today to assist with a burnout operation along the West Rim Trail.
Smoke from the fire may settle into some of the canyons at night, especially Zion Canyon and the North Fork Canyon, but it should dissipate by mid-morning as the down canyons winds decrease.
The fire is being managed for resource benefits under the direction of a local Type III Fire Management organization, overseen by Zion Fire and Resource Management personnel. The objectives are to keep the fire to the east side of the West Rim Trail and to allow the fire to burn into theThree Finger Mesa Prescribed Fire Burn Unit from last year to the north and into the interior of the park to the southeast. These management options will allow the fire to return to its natural role on the plateau while also reducing the risks to adjacent private lands and structures from future wildfires.
Due to yesterdays increased fire activity the closure on the West Rim Trail has been expanded. The trail is now closed from Lava Point to the junction with the Telephone Canyon Trail (near campsite #6). Imlay Canyon is also closed. The West Rim Trail from the Grotto to the Telephone Canyon remains open, as does the Angels Landing Trail and the Wildcat Canyon Trail.
